June 2022, you were full to the brim. You brought June 2022, you were full to the brim. You brought many opportunities for connection, an abundance of celebrations, a lot of time in nature, some fun-filled family adventures and a heartbreaking goodbye 🐶. Even among the hard, my heart is full and I’m grateful.

They see me tilling, they hating. 😏 Yes, the p They see me tilling, they hating. 😏

Yes, the practices mentioned in the comment are all *options* I could have used.

I *choose* to till my garden. You can read why in the caption of my last reel.

Reminder, there’s no one way to do something. There are *many* ways.

🌱 Understand the impact of your gardening practices.

🌱 Be open to learning & growing as a gardener.

🌱 AND choose the practices that work best for you and your garden, despite what folks on the internet have to say about it.

✨ We can choose different practices and still respect one another as gardeners. ✨

Side note: check yourself before you mansplain yourself.

Tilling isn’t for every gardener. Here’s why I Tilling isn’t for every gardener. Here’s why I till my garden in the spring:

👩🏻‍🌾 To warm the soil quicker in the spring, which benefits our shorter growing season of roughly 120 days.

👩🏻‍🌾 To break down and incorporate organic matter, like last years veggies you saw in the previous reels. Chopping up and working those potato plants, tomato plants and that pile of leaves into the soil allows the organic matter to gradually compost in the soil, which will increase the soil nutrients.

👩🏻‍🌾 To help loosen this heavy clay soil, allowing for easier planting and rooting of newly germinated seeds.

👩🏻‍🌾 To chop up any existing weeds. However, tilling can also create more weeds by bringing weed seeds to the surface and exposing them to the elements they need to grow.

👩🏻‍🌾 To eliminate any potential pests that may have been overwintering in the soil and would emerge in spring and eat away at the garden.

Drop a 🙌🏻 if you’re ready to start planting!

Well, that didn’t go as planned. Nothing a big Well, that didn’t go as planned.

Nothing a big ‘ol zucchini plant can’t fix!

Some of the grass I tilled up is sure to come back. So, instead of replanting the strawberries in the exact same spot - I planted a zucchini.

Why?

- The size of the zucchini plant will help choke out most of the grass, unlike the strawberries who weren’t able to compete.

- The zucchini plant is an annual, unlike the strawberry plant, so I can pull it out at the end of the growing season and spray the grasses if needed.

What’s your fave homegrown vegetable?
