It drives my husband crazy when my laptop, planner and notebooks are scattered all over the kitchen table. And, it drives me crazy when I’m trying to work at said kitchen table and the guy won’t stop talking.
The perfect solution? A home office.
The problem? I’ve got a long list of home projects and this one was near the bottom.
Currently I work at our kitchen table, the public library and at times our local coffee shop. Some days all three. At this stage of my life it’s more efficient for me to work in the city, while the kids are at daycare, instead of travelling back and forth to the farm.
When we designed our basement floor plan, we made sure to include a home office. We both knew we were going to need a designated space to work from home, but we were convinced it wasn’t necessary until I was working from home full time (which won’t be for another two years!).
A few weeks ago plans changed when hubs came to me and said, “I need an office sooner than later!”. With some recent changes on the farm he is going to be doing more office work and the kitchen table just isn’t cutting it. Therefore, the office project has jumped to priority numero uno.
Side note: I like to give him a hard time about needing an office right now, but secretly I’m super excited to have a space to work. Shh, don’t tell him.
When he first pitched the idea to me I was overwhelmed. Designing our home office was at the bottom of the ‘project list’. In fact, it wasn’t even on my radar for this year. My initial thought – let’s just hire a designer to get it done and off my ‘project list’.
Over the next week or so, this project lingered in the back of my mind. My intuition was telling me to hold off on contacting a designer. Every time I went downstairs I was greeted with a room full of potential. I would stand in the middle of the room and try to dream up all that it could be, but every time I fell short. I drew a blank. I struggled to come up with a vision.
Was it because this room was really important to me?
Was it because this room needed to function in so many different ways?
Or was it because I was doubting my ability to design this room?
All of these were impacting my struggles, but the last one had the most impact. I was doubting my abilities to design this room. I was telling myself all kinds of stories about why I couldn’t design this room, like…
I’m not a professional designer.
I didn’t go to school for design or interior decorating.
The room is small.
How am I going to make it function in all the ways it needs to?
The list goes on.
But, you know what? As soon as I changed my story. As soon as I started to believe in myself. As soon as I started to believe that I could in fact design this dang room. It all started falling into place.
A little belief in ourselves can go a long way.
So with my new found belief and a side of inspiration, here’s the home office design plan *I* created.
All. By. Myself.
If you can’t tell – I’m pretty proud of it!

P.S. ‘The Art That Inspired It All’ really did inspire it all. While I was at my friend’s art show, I fell in love with this piece. Not only are the colors amazing, the message behind the balloon really resonates with me. If you want to learn more about Jess and her amazing art, you can find her on Facebook and Instagram.
I love love love it and cannot wait!!!!!
I’m pretty excited too! Now, let the ‘real’ work begin!
