Last week my daughter and I were browsing our local Dollar Store. We were on the hunt for supplies for her upcoming birthday party. As we browsed the aisles, I came across the artist panels I used in to make the DIY farmhouse signs for our laundry room makeover and I intuitively picked up two of the large panels.
The following morning I woke up super early to a cough and what felt like nails in my throat when I swallowed. My husband offered to take the kids to daycare so I could spend the day at home. And, I jumped alllll over the opportunity.
That same morning I felt a gentle nudge to create, but I had a to do list a mile long and no planned project. I decided to put my to do list aside, listen to the little whisper and do something that was so good for my soul… create. I love creating, especially when it comes to home decor! (You can read more about that here.)
This was a big step for me. Going against my plan, creating a project without an end product in mind and trusting my intuition. I’m getting better at listening to those little whispers. Where do you stand? Do you tend to stick to the plan or listen to the whispers of your soul?
I am so excited to share this project with you! It’s simple, inexpensive and makes an impact. If you’re a beginner, it’s the perfect place to start. If you’re a pro, this will be a breeze for you.
Let’s get started, shall we?!
DIY DOLLAR STORE PICTURE FRAME TUTORIAL
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Dollar Store Artist Panel
- Cricut Explore Air or Custom Vinyl Decals
- White Paint
- Paint Brush
- Painters Tape
- Wood Stain
- Staining Rags
- Bulldog Clips
- Glue
- Hanging Hardware
- Sticky Tack
STEPS:
1. Flip your artist panel around and cover the inside with tape. The back of the artist panel will be the front of your sign. Yes, we are using the artist panel backwards. Brilliant, right?
** If you are not local to a Dollar Store, these wooden artist panels sold on Amazon are a great alternative and they are available in various sizes.**
Side Note: My local Dollar Store sells these artist panels in two sizes – 8” x 10” (which is what I used for my laundry room signs) or 12” x 16” (which is what I used for this project).
2. Stain the sides, as well as the back. I only needed one coat to achieve my desired look.
3. Remove the tape, then tape the inside of the frame and paint the inside of the sign white.
4. Once the paint is dry, remove the tape and attach vinyl decal. Guys, this method is so much simpler & cleaner than the stencil technique I used in the farmhouse sign tutorial (link).
Tip: I make my stencils & decals with my Circut Explore Air. If you have been thinking about purchasing one of these glorious machines, now is the time!
5. Attach bulldog clip to your frame using glue.
6. Attach your hanging hardware and hang on the wall.
Tip: If you attached picture hangers in the middle of the panel like I did, then grab some sticky tack and place it on the bottom of the frame. Once you hang up your sign, level it and firmly push on the bottom of the frame so the sticky tack adheres to the wall and holds your sign firmly in place. No more adjusting crooked signs! You. Are. Welcome.
7. Clip in your photo and enjoy!
There you have it… A personalized farmhouse picture frame that is inexpensive and allows you to easily update the photo. We plan to use these frames to display school photos, which means they will be updated yearly. The easier it is for me to change the photo the more likely I am to change it. So, these are a perfect fit!
